Founded as a town in 1793, it amalgamated with the city of Hamilton in 2001, yet still retains its village quaintness. It is the most westerly portion of the Golden Horseshoe and is considered to be an affluent community whose residents typically commute to work in either Hamilton, Brantford, Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga or Toronto.

Ancaster enjoys a stunning natural setting and is home to the Tiffany Falls Conservation Area, Sherman Falls and Sulpher Springs Artesian Well. Development in Olde Ancaster, the historic village core, has been tightly controlled. The current building boom is on the east side of Highway 403 and includes residential developments such as The Meadowlands, Tiffany Hill and Monterey Heights.

Wilson Street is the heart of the old town and is home to many independently owned businesses including a French bakery (www.canichebakery.com), boutiques (www.karisofancaster.com), the Old Firehall Arts Centre and the Rosseau House restaurant, (www.rosseauhouse.ca).

The Ancaster Mill (www.ancastermill.ca) has been at the centre of local history for more than 200 years. The existing building, built in 1863, originally served as a flour mill and opened as a restaurant in 1979. Constructed of native limestone and restored to keep its authentic character intact, this stunning building is situated in a spectacular setting of waterfalls.

Home to the 2019 Canadian Open, The Hamilton Golf & Country Club, is actually located in Ancaster! It is a club that values tradition, sportsmanship and camaraderie through the enjoyment of the game. This impeccable course has previously been home to the Open and is admired by some of the world’s greatest players! The clubhouse, built in 1929, is an architectural gem, modernized to encompass today’s amenities.

Ancaster is part of the Hamilton-Wentworth District School Board which includes both public and independent elementary and secondary schools.
