Originally founded in 1834 and annexed into the Town of Oakville in 1962, Bronte offers abundant public access to waterfront areas, world class marinas, beautiful parks, several luxury Lakeside condo towers such as The Shores and Blu Water, new detached modern builds, plus classic bungalows built in the 50’s + 60’s.Bronte is a very popular area for seniors to retire, particularly Condos in Ennisclare on the Lake, voted 2016 Condo of the year by The Golden Horseshoe Condominium Association! Bronte is considered an up and coming area with lots of new development planned. In particular, Bronte Village is one of six growth areas identified in the Livable Oakville Plan. This plan identifies that Bronte Village is intended to be revitalized as a mixed use area with a thriving commercial area and a variety of housing options that provide a year round environment for residents, employees, and visitors.
Affectionately known as “Brontonians,” the population of Bronte is about 10,000. The well established commercial centre of Bronte is located at Bronte and Lakeshore Roads. The neighbourhood of Bronte stretches from Burloak Drive in the west to Fourth Line, and from Lake Ontario in the south to the Queen Elizabeth Way. Coronation Park, which has a large playground, lots of parking space, a field room, and sandy beaches, hosts an annual Waterfront Festival. The Bronte Heritage Waterfront Park is host to the spectacular Canada Day Celebrations and fireworks!
The community of Lakeshore Woods bordering Burloak features Detached and Townhomes perfectly suited to Families with children. This community is new, with construction development having started in 2000. Lakeshore Woodsborders the popular Shell Parkwhich features a skateboard park, a leash free dog zone, in addition to its many sporting fields. Also, in close proximity is the incredible Bronte Provincial Park offering miles of spectacular hiking trails, camping, a playbarn for the kids, and a huge outdoor wave pool!
Bronte has a number of great school to choose from, including Queen Elizabeth Park (closed & now recreation centre), Gladys Speers, Eastview and Brookdale (Public Elementary), St. Dominic and St. Joseph (Catholic Elementary), and Oakville Christian School, formerly John Wilson (Public Elementary). And finally, Thomas A. Blakelock (Public High School).
Founded in 1834, Bronte began as a small fishing village at the mouth of Twelve Mile Creek. The name Bronte was chosen as a tribute to the British Naval hero, Horatio Nelson, who was made Duke of Bronte by King Ferdinand III of Sicily. Bronte is a former fishing village which became annexed in 1962 with the former Township of Trafalgar, forming the Town of Oakville.(source)
One of the early industries in Bronte was stonehooking. Boats would gather stone slabs from shallow waters near the shore by hooking them from Lake Ontario for use in construction. (source) The building at 49 Bronte Road built circa 1840 still remains as an example of construction using material stonehooked from the lake. (source).
